Are you an Endocrinologist? See why we need to work together!

Studies for Neuro-Based Speech-Language Pathologists and Endocrinologists:
1.According to a 2009 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, Type-2 diabetics who experienced severe hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar, without medical treatment increased their dementia risk by 26 percent. But having several episodes of hypoglycemia raises this risk by up to 160 percent.

2. At the UC Davis Mind Institute, it was shown that the children of diabetic mothers who had Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) were more disabled -- had greater deficits in language comprehension and production and adaptive communication -- than were the children with ASD born to healthy mothers.

Why we refer our clients to endocrinologists?
Detecting memory deficits is important because of its link to those diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. In some cases, our clients that are experiencing notable memory deficits, have also not sought sufficient medical treatment to assess whether they are diabetics.

Why do endocrinologists refer patients to Neuro-Based Speech-Language Pathologists?
When the sugar levels drop, there is impairment of brain function, particularly memory and attention. If it drops long enough and low enough, it can cause long term damage. The part of the brain that is most susceptible to low blood sugars is also the seat of memory, the hippocampus.

Diagnosing and treating memory and communication deficits is what we do at Robateau & Associates.

Are you a Cardiologist? See why we need to work together!

Studies for Neuro-Based Speech-Language Pathologists and Cardiologists:
1. According to a study sponsored by the National Institute on Aging, vascular risk factors and aging, and stroke contribute to progressive brain atrophy and cognitive decline.

2. According to researchers at the Mayo Clinic, in JAMA Neurology, elderly adults with cardiac disease, including atrial fibrillation and coronary heart disease, are 1.8 times more likely to develop non-amnestic mild cognitive impairment, or naMCI, than similarly aged individuals without a heart condition.

Why we refer our clients to cardiologists?
Detecting cognitive impairment is important so that at-risk patients can be referred to you for a cardiac consultation. Some of our clients who had poor performance of executive function, working memory, and verbal fluency were also shown to be at an elevated risk for coronary artery disease and stroke.

Why do cardiologists refer patients to Neuro-based Speech-Language Pathologists?
Neuroimaging scans show that those who have heart disease or are experiencing heart disease risk factors are also experiencing cerebrovascular difficulties and will experience some cognitive decline. As well, those taking statin drugs as treatment for cardiovascular disease may experience memory deficits and confusion.

Addressing the results of cognitive decline that have already occurred and endeavoring to prevent further decline is what we do at Robateau & Associates.

Are you a Psychologist? See why we need to work together!

Studies for Neuro-Based Speech-Language Pathologists and Psychologists:
1.There are associations among language, discourse, and psychopathology in children. According to a study published in the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, discourse deficits in language and information structure characterized children with language impairments (LI), whereas disruptions in the flow of discourse characterized children with psychiatric disorders (PD). Children with the comorbid condition exhibited deficits associated with both LI and PD.

2. In a 2004 article published in the Journal of Child Neurology, complex associations were shown between language disorders and learning disabilities and various psychiatric disorders.

Why we refer our clients to Psychologists/Psychiatrists?
Studies have shown that many children with delayed language also have behavioral problems. Children with language disorders manifest hard-to-manage behaviors and evidence of emotional distress.

Why do Psychologists refer patients to Neuro-Based Speech-Language Pathologists?
There is sufficient evidence from both mental health and educational settings that many children with behavioral or psychiatric disorders (ERB) have speech and language deficiencies. Addressing speech-language deficits is important for providing coordinated assessments and interventions.Providing appropriate interventions for both ERB and language deficiencies is pertinent in meeting the needs of students identified with co-occurring disabilities.

Diagnosing and creating treatment plans for children with speech-language, pragmatic/social language deficits are what we do at Robateau & Associates.

Are you an Oncologist? See why we need to work together!

Studies for Neuro-Based Speech-Language Pathologists and Oncologists:
1. A study cited in The Journal of Pediatric Oncology Nursing noted the prevalence and severity of swallowing/feeding disorders and communication impairments among children with cancer and nonmalignant hematological disorders.

Why we refer our clients to Oncologists?
Children with dysphagia, behavioral feeding issues and communications disorders may be suffering from central nervous system tumors or nonmalignant hematological disorders.

Why do Oncologists refer patients to Neuro-Based Speech-Language Pathologists?
Dysphagia is common following posterior fossa tumor resection and children with central nervous system tumors are likely to require speech-language pathology services due to the cancer’s adverse impact on the child’s receptive/expressive language, voice, resonance, stuttering, or literacy.

Assessing, diagnosing, and managing communication and swallowing disorders is what we do at Robateau & Associates.
